RHYTHM OF POISON (2020)

Rhythm of Poison is a vast new creation by Finnish choreographer and musician Elina Pirinen. The work is made for the Iceland Dance Company in collaboration with Finnish composer & sound designer Ville Kabrell, dramaturge Heidi Väätänen and lighting designer Valdimar Jóhannsson.

Pirinen works again closely with corporeal imagination, libido, wildness and intimacy and tries to decay, eat alive and poetically emancipate the zeitgeistic ideals of corporeal art as an instrument and language.

The performance vibrates transformative and subjectively expressionist movements, music, vocal and visual processes of seven dancers. These libidian wonders of the bodies surround the audience to flow back and forth into colourful subconscious nights and daydreams. This aims for creating a free associative feminist renaissance corporeal environment.

I am your baywatch
You my opium flower
I sew your twilight heart
to my heart’s power
We swim in smoke rings
The bells play
Dunes, sharks, kites with us, stay!

Rhythm of Poison desires to seduce the audience to drown in their free assosiative inner speach as immersive happening by focusing artisticly on peculiarly moving phantasmas, deep joy, ongoing hidden and open gothic emerge between ”the inner and outer”, deliciously performed transgression and regression, romance, the courage of desperation and the beauty of obsession.

”Maybe empathy does not distill out of moralism, maybe it seeps out from noticing and exposing to the blurred union between peculiarity and familiarity.”
